About Bay Head
On September 6, 1879, the Bayhead Land Company was founded with a capital of $12,000. The company’s founding members included David H. Mount from Rocky Hill, and three Princeton individuals: Edward Howe, Leavitt Howe, and William Harris. Within a few years, the resort experienced growth in population, with the construction of a seawall, roads, and grading. By 1882, Bay Head had expanded to include 20 new cottages and a population of 75 residents.
In the summer of 1882, Bay Head’s first post office was established, with Julius Foster serving as the inaugural postmaster.
The Bay Head Historic District, which was added to the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 2005, features over 550 contributing structures, accounting for more than half of the town’s buildings. This makes it one of New Jersey’s largest historic districts. The district is renowned for its impressive collection of well-maintained Shingle Style, Stick Style, and Queen Anne Style buildings.
The 1,260-meter (4,130-foot) stone rubble seawall, constructed in 1882 and later concealed by dunes, played a crucial role in minimizing the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy to the town.
