About Barnegat

Barnegat Township, situated in Ocean County within the U.S. state of New Jersey, experienced population growth in the 2020 United States census. The township’s population reached 24,296, marking the highest count in a decennial census and a 16.0% increase from the 2010 census count of 20,936. This, in turn, represented a 37.1% increase from the 15,270 residents counted in the 2000 census.

The present-day Barnegat Township was initially incorporated as Union Township on March 10, 1846. It was formed from parts of Dover Township (now known as Toms River Township) and Stafford Township when the region was still part of Monmouth County. On February 15, 1850, it became a part of the newly established Ocean County.

Over time, portions of the township were taken to create Lacey Township (March 23, 1871), Ocean Township (April 13, 1876), Harvey Cedars (December 13, 1894), and Long Beach Township (March 23, 1899). Union Township officially changed its name to Barnegat Township on January 1, 1977.
